Understanding our responsibility to “Manage” Foreign Object Debris when working on Aircraft.
Introduction
This ½ day course considers the obligations of the individual who is working on and around aircraft.
Foreign Object Debris (FOD) each year costs the aviation industry many millions of dollars. In the vicinity of aircraft FOD has the potential to cause problem to the aircraft with the possibility of being ingested into the aircraft engine, which can result in damage to the aircraft or cause an accident.
Some sources estimate that worldwide FOD causes more than 2.5 billion USD in damage to engines and aircraft taken out of service each year. FOD can damage or become lodged in aircraft operating mechanisms or cause dame of cut aircraft tires.
Air France Flight 4590 was lost with the loss of more than 100 lives in July, 2000, due to FOD on the runway (A piece of titanium debris from a departing US bound DC-10) the FOD caused the failure of a main wheel tire which caused in turn the fuel tank to rupture. The leaking fuel ignited and brought the aircraft down!
