Steven Bentley FRAeS, CEO of Sofema Aviation Services and Sofema Online, has been appointed to the C3 Specialist Group (Computing, Cybersecurity, and Communications) of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
This prestigious group is dedicated to advancing knowledge and expertise in computing, cybersecurity, and communications as they relate to aviation, aerospace, and space. As technology continues to shape the future, integrating these critical areas ensures a holistic approach to tackling the most pressing challenges of our time.
Serving as the Society’s center of knowledge, the C3 Specialist Group delivers expert output and guidance on information systems, sensors, threat prediction and mitigation, and communications security. It provides an impartial forum for the advancement of related ideas, practices, and solutions, fostering innovation and security in these rapidly evolving fields.
The C3 Specialist Group is responsible for generating and delivering learned content and output, supporting the overall aims and objectives of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Its goal is to ensure the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of information required by the aviation, aerospace, and space sectors.
Additionally, the C3 Specialist Group aims to provide its wider Community of Interest (COI) with knowledge and awareness of RAeS activities and broader industry developments, offering opportunities for engagement and participation.
Steven Bentley brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of leadership in aviation services to the C3 SG. He leads Sofema Online, which develops multiple EASA-compliant courses for the industry. One of the initial online courses currently available is the “EASA Compliant Organization Cyber Security Responsibilities” course. This course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles of cybersecurity as they apply to the aviation industry. Given the increasing reliance of aviation systems on digital technologies, this course equips learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to protect aviation operations and maintenance environments from cyber-attacks.
EASA Regulatory Drivers for Cybersecurity:
EASA mandates that various business domains, including production and design organizations, air operators, maintenance organizations, CAMOs, training organizations, aero-medical centers, FSTD operators, ATM/ANS providers, U-space service providers, and aerodrome operators, meet new cybersecurity objectives. This course ensures that competent authorities and industry stakeholders are comprehensively prepared to meet these regulatory and organizational obligations.
