EASA Part 145 / Part 147 Instructor – Train the Trainer
Learning Styles – How to Maximise Absorption
Sofema Aviation Services offers a look at content from our 5-Day EASA Part 145 / Part 147 Instructor Techniques Train the Trainer Course
What do we Mean by Learning Retention?
It is commonly understood that we retain 20% – 30% of what we are exposed to in the classroom our goal is to try to improve how much new information we can transfer from our short term to our long-term memory.
Sometimes called the “Learning Curve” it is typical that we forget around 70% of any new information within the first 24 hours.
It is well known that active learning participants will retain information for longer. Therefore, we should design the training program to include both reviews and summaries throughout the training
The Challenge
Quite simply the challenge is to sufficiently engage the student that the retention rate grows.
The following are ways in which we can improve the retention rate.
Less Content = More Retention
People can only concentrate for relatively short spans of time, (maximum around 20 mins after which their capacity to recall diminishes)
So little and often means that smaller and more focused content is far more likely to be retained and remembered for much longer.
Language of the Senses – Tell a Story!
We remember things better when we have an emotional link to the subject being
learned.
A great way to create that link is by storytelling. Creating a story which the students can relate to help to get the message across by focussing on the key learning objectives in an engaging and connected way.
Promote Active Participation
Active learning undoubtedly increases student engagement and leads to much better retention of new knowledge.
Physical engagement in the learning through the use of interactive activities and simulations which can then bring the student into the learning environment.
Question and Answer suggestions are an ideal way of checking for understanding and provide for re-enforcement of the message.
Multiple Exposure – Repetition
Repeating in different (but connected) ways, the information which is being learned provides for a positive re-enforcement and is highly beneficial to support the transfer of information to the student’s long term memory.
Real Life Connections
The more direct relevance between the training and the students real-life exposure the higher will be the retention rate – because the information is re-enforcing existing knowledge. As an added bonus if we can help the student to make the connection the effect will become stronger.
