Introduction
Aircraft exterior cleaning requires more than knowledge of cleaning products and techniques. Personnel must recognise operational hazards, follow ramp safety procedures, and understand the risks of damaging sensitive aircraft components.
This specialised two-day training programme equips new aircraft cleaning operators with the essential knowledge and practical skills to work safely in the aviation environment. It covers aviation awareness, ramp safety, occupational health and safety, and exterior cleaning procedures, with emphasis on aircraft protection, appropriate cleaning products, and safe working practices.
Who is the course for?
This course is intended for entry-level aircraft exterior cleaning staff, ramp service personnel, line maintenance support staff, and ground handling operatives with no prior aviation background. It is also suitable for ground operations supervisors seeking to reinforce ramp safety and standardized exterior detailing procedures within their teams.
What is the Benefit of this Training – What will I learn?
a) Gain a solid understanding of basic aircraft exterior terminology and airside layout to communicate effectively on the ramp.
b) Develop a strong awareness of major ramp hazards, including engine intake zones, propeller arcs, jet blast, and ground support equipment (GSE) traffic.
c) Master the rules of operating within the “Circle of Safety” around the aircraft and executing Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention measures.
d) Learn the correct selection and application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and chemical safety protocols specific to exterior washing.
e) Understand proper masking techniques to protect pitot tubes, static ports, and angle-of-attack sensors prior to washing.
f) Apply safe wet and dry washing techniques, flight deck window cleaning, and specialized paint detailing without causing surface or sensor damage.
Detailed Content / Topics – The following Subjects will be addressed
Day 1: Aviation Hazards, Ramp Safety, and PPE
The first day establishes a critical foundation in aviation safety for personnel unfamiliar with the ramp environment, focusing on recognizing dangers before any cleaning equipment is handled.
- Intro & Aviation Terminology. Overview of the aircraft exterior (fuselage, wings, empennage, landing gear, radome). Basic terminology to ensure clear communication on the ramp.
- Critical Ramp Safety & Dangers. In-depth breakdown of ramp hazards: jet blast, engine ingestion zones, propeller arcs, and moving ground support equipment (GSE).
- FOD & The Circle of Safety. Defining Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and its catastrophic risks. Rules for operating within the “Circle of Safety” around the aircraft, including speed limits and equipment staging.
- Health, Safety & PPE. Manual handling hazards, ergonomics, and chemical safety. Selection and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for exterior washing (harnesses, high-vis, eye protection, non-slip footwear).
- Practical Session 1: Ramp Orientation Hands-on ramp walkaround. Trainees will map out the Circle of Safety, conduct a simulated FOD sweep, and practice identifying restricted zones (pitot tubes, static ports, engine cowlings).
Day 2: Exterior Cleaning Procedures & Practical Application
The second day transitions into the technical application of cleaning products and tooling, ensuring that exterior washing and detailing are performed without damaging aircraft sensors, paint, or windows.
- Equipment, Tooling & Products. Introduction to exterior cleaning agents, degreasers, and applicators. Understanding chemical compatibility with aircraft aluminum and composite materials.
- Exterior Washing & Window Cleaning. Dry vs. wet washing techniques. Critical pre-wash procedures: masking and protecting static ports, pitot tubes, and angle of attack sensors. Techniques for cleaning exterior flight deck windows without scratching acrylics.
- Paint Treatments & Detailing Procedures for waxing, oxidation removal, and heavy stain removal (e.g., exhaust soot, Skydrol/hydraulic fluid leaks) using approved aviation polish and buffing tools.
- Practical Session 2: Exterior Wash Guided, hands-on exterior cleaning session. Trainees will practice masking sensors, applying cleaning agents, using extended washing poles, and executing safe manual handling of equipment around the fuselage.
Target Groups
- Entry-level aircraft exterior cleaning technicians.
- Ground handling and ramp service support staff.
- Facilities and service personnel transitioning into airside maintenance operations.
- Team leaders and supervisors overseeing exterior aircraft detailing teams.
Pre-requisites
No prior aviation background or technical experience required. Trainees should possess basic awareness of occupational safety principles.
Learning Objectives
- To provide new operators with the foundational safety knowledge required to work safely in a live airside ramp environment.
- To establish proper procedures for identifying and protecting sensitive aircraft sensors and airframe components before washing.
- To deliver practical skills in applying approved aviation cleaning products, tooling, and surface treatment methods.
- To instill strict adherence to FOD prevention, Circle of Safety rules, and correct PPE usage during exterior servicing.
