Introduction
An infectious substance can be defined as a microorganism that is known or reasonably believed to cause disease in humans or animals. The infectious substance might be contained in blood, tissue, organs, body fluids, vaccines, or cultures.
International and domestic transport regulations for infectious substances are designed to prevent contaminations with such materials during transportation and to protect the crew members, passengers, public, workers, property, and the environment from the harmful effects that may occur from exposure to these materials. Protection is achieved by using specific packaging requirements, marking, labeling, and documentation. Packages must be designed to withstand rough handling and other forces experienced in transportation, such as changes in air pressure and temperature, vibration, stacking, and moisture.
This training is designed to enable shippers, carriers, and receivers of infectious substances and patient specimens to safely meet their obligations under the various regulations which govern the shipping of these materials. Infectious substances are dangerous goods classified in Division 6.2 according to the UN Model Regulations.
The training is based on IATA Infectious Substances Shipping Guidelines. In this course, you will learn about the regulations applicable to the international transport of infectious substances. This course presents all steps in the shipping process of substances classified as Category A and Category B. As well you will learn about the transport of “biological products,” “clinical waste” and “exempt human and exempt animal” specimens. In addition to transport by air, this training covers also other transportation modes such as marine, road, rail, and postal services.

– Packaging – how infectious substances need to be packed in order to ensure the safety of the transport and to avoid spillage or contamination
– Marking and labeling- why infectious substances need to be correctly marked and labeled
– Documentation – how the shipper declaration has to be filled and what other documents may be required
– Handling of infectious substances – what are the actions of the shipper, the operator, and the consignee to ensure safe transport?
– Emergency response- what needs to be done in case of an incident connected with infectious substances

This course is designed for Airline and Ground Handling cargo acceptance staff, freight forwarders, personnel of Medical organizations involved in the preparation and shipment of Infectious Substances and/or clinical waste, Laboratory personnel shipping viruses and samples for research purposes, and Manufacturers of Pharmaceutical products.
Pre-requisites
Working knowledge of the English language is required. As well as basic principles of transport of cargo by air. Possession of the latest edition of IATA Infectious Substances Shipping Guidelines is a must.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
• State the legislation that governs different modes of transport.
• Define the UN numbers and describe the criteria for categorization of category A and B infectious substances
• Describe the Basic Triple Packaging System, Quantity Limits allowed, and procedures to follow when freezing or cooling a package.
• Apply the correct markings and labels for a shipment of Category A or Category B substances
• Complete the Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (or Dangerous Goods Declaration – DGD)
• Use of a checklist to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Act correctly in the event of an emergency.
