Introduction

This 1day Intensive Course focuses on the requirements to ensure the effective performance of the Aircraft De-icing & Anti-icing process and procedures through flight crew assessment and visual inspection.

How to assess the compliance of Aircraft De-icing / Anti-Icing Quality Control processes in accordance with SOP.s and checklists?

This course prepares delegates with a thorough understanding necessary to perform effective audits of Aircraft De-icing / Anti-icing processes. See more

Regulatory Background

  • Ref Ops Regulation 965/2012 – CAT.OP.MPA.250, requires commercial air transport operators to ‘establish procedures to be followed when ground de-icing and anti-icing and related inspections of the aircraft are necessary to allow the safe operation of the aircraft’.
  • Refer also to SPO.OP.175 and NCC.OP.185, applicable to ‘Commercial operations other than commercial air transport’ and ‘Non-commercial operations with complex motor-powered aircraft’, respectively.
  • Guidance Material (GM) GM3 to CAT.OP.MPA.250 states that the basis for establishing the procedures for ground de-icing can be found in the Association of European Airlines (AEA) ‘Recommendations for de-icing/anti-icing of aircraft on the ground’ and AEA ‘Training recommendations and background information for de-icing/anti-icing of aircraft on the ground’.
  • The AEA ‘Recommendations for de-icing/anti-icing of aircraft on the ground’ also contained a valid reference for the Holdover Time (HOT) tables used by European air operators. There is also a similar GM related to the SPO.OP.175 and NCC.OP.185 provisions.

General Recommendations

  • All flight crew and all other persons involved in the inspection of aircraft for contaminants and the application of ground de/anti-icing fluids shall receive initial and recurrent training on the subject.
  • Flight Crew must have up to date information concerning the latest Holdover Time (HOT) Tables.
  • Effective Quality Control procedures should be in place to ensure that due process is carried procedures to ensure effective delivery of ground de/anti-icing by the service provider.
  • Aircraft operators should ensure that Quality Assurance Process validates all elements of the Ground De/Anti Icing process.
  • Communication at all times should be in accordance with the De/Anti-Icing Code.
  • All details of the aircraft treatment were carried out to avoid any misunderstandings.
  • Regarding engine intake de/anti-icing, operators are recommended to follow the advice contained in EASA SIN 2008-29 (Please see SAS Download Area).
