Sofema Aviation Services were invited to manage a Safety Culture Survey for a major airline employing several hundred staff.

The project was accepted and the process was agreed and support by the HR department of the Airline.

The rational of such a survey is to understand in as honest way what the perception of the employees is regarding the multiple risk and exposure driven by cultural behaviour within the organisation.

The survey consists of 100 questions with some deliberately repeated to ensure consistency. Questions were matched with the ICAO framework (safety policy and objectives; safety risk management; safety assurance; and safety promotion.)

The survey was confidential but managed in an “obligatory way” to ensure a valid cross section of company employees responded.

Benefits of the Survey

a) It provides a base line in respect of raw data to manage the metric for “How well are we doing” and to demonstrate “Continuous Improvement in Performance”

b) From the responses we are able to identify 10 SMS Cultural Behaviour “Hot Spots”

c) Each “Hot Spot” is then considered as a project to review the appropriate mitigations in respect of

i/ Improved Process &/or Procedure

ii/ Better communication of the objectives

iii/ Enhanced Training

iv/ Improved visibility

d) The next survey will be carried out after a further 6 months with the intention of demonstrating

i/ SMS openness

ii/ Improved Performance

iii/ Visibility of progress
