Rus is a graduate of Kingston University B.Eng. (Hons.) with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He has more than 20 years of experience in aircraft engineering and maintenance, 15 of which have been spent working for various high-profile aviation businesses in Technical Services functions. From 1997 onwards he worked with a number of influential aviation businesses such as Monarch Aircraft Engineering & Maintenance as an Aviation Technical Services Specialist.

Rus is a seasoned aviation professional with a track record in technical services functions and aviation training services from within the arenas of Quality, Safety & Airworthiness. He has been engaged by a portfolio of high-profile aviation clients ranging from leading aviation training businesses, general aviation, major blue-chip international companies, aircraft operators, and major international airlines & airports. The instructor has completed a wide variety of aviation projects.

We asked Rus a few questions about his working experience with Sofema

1. Initially, what inspired you to start a career in aviation?

“My father was a Ramp Handling Technician at Air India in Heathrow. As such, I spent a great deal of time at the Air India Hangar on the Southern Perimeter of Heathrow Airport. My inspiration came from my dad’s friends and close family who worked at Air India. They were involved with B707 maintenance inspections, where I was taught (from the age of ten) about the different tools, not least, how to use them.

However, the Boeing B747 is my true inspiration and passion. This is because it is unique as a technology that changed the aviation world on so many different levels. The B747 made the world accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few.”

2. For how long have you been delivering aviation courses?

“In addition to the delivery of training courses, I also develop them as well. I’ve been doing this since 2009 and more recently for Sofema.”

3. Which aspects do you find most rewarding in your career?

“Aviation training is one of those disciplines where, you have to be constantly looking forward and challenge yourself to develop better and more engaging training experiences for my students/delegates, whilst also maintaining compliance in terms of aviation technologies, regulations, and company policies and requirements. The greatest reward for me is passing back my knowledge and experience, especially to trainees, recently qualified engineers, and experienced specialists involved in aircraft maintenance planning and reliability, where I myself am a specialist for Sofema.”

4. You’ve delivered quite a few courses on behalf of Sofema. What is the best part about being a SAS trainer?

“Sofema being a truly global business has exposed me to a wide variety of aviation businesses, working cultures, and people. I think that the most rewarding aspects of being a SAS trainer are meeting new people and immersing myself in their national and working cultures. To this effect, my students have also become my instructors, as they have shown me alternative ways of thinking and doing things without losing sight of the safety, quality, and airworthiness horizons, as such I, have become more open-minded than I used to be.”

5. What can the delegates expect from the forthcoming training session in Dubai?

“Unlike other training course suppliers, it isn’t enough just to provide theoretical instruction without a current technical context, not least offering a competent basis for effective training. Working with Sofema, students attending my courses can expect up-to-date knowledge and current experience of an active senior consultant, with experience in writing Continuing Airworthiness Management Expositions, Aircraft Maintenance Programmes, and other compliant aviation manuals. To all intents and purposes, students/delegates can expect to receive answers to questions, together with freely given advice, that they can take back to their desks for immediate utilisation.”

6. Lastly, what motivates you as an aviation instructor?

“A lot of my friends and colleagues think that I can be ‘over-the-top’ when I place safety above everything else. However, my teachers always ensured that my first duty was to ensure that the maintained aircraft was good enough to fly in for my dearest friends and family. Sending my students back to their desks, hangars, and workshops armed with current knowledge and basic competence that also ensures the safety and the preservation of life, both onboard the aircraft and on the ground as well, is the singular reason for my existence.”
