Techniques for Making Effective Workplace Decisions
Introducing SofemaOnline Aviation Leadership Diploma Program â Outstanding value â now is the time to take control and accelerate your career:
The Challenge Facing All Decision-Makers
We know that decision-making doesnât necessarily come easy, it takes practice & to feel comfortable and confident.
- Try to isolate and give yourself the time needed to weigh up the pros & cons which you are facing.
- Decision making requires âDataâ so make sure you have gathered sufficient information to be comfortable with your objective.
- Try to avoid âBiasâ â whilst Bias is common, you should endeavour to recognise and work with it, otherwise your choices will tend to reflect your bias and potentially impact the effectiveness of your decision making.
- Be clear and methodical in your thought process. A calm & clear mind is the best foundation for effective decision-making. The opposite of Bias is objectivity and we should focus on the need to deliver the most objective decision we can for the best outcome.
- Go with your Instincts â often they will lead you in the right direction and reflect what is best for you.
- Use SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) to help you visualise your optimum decision. Whilst every decision has pluses and minuses, it is only through a careful analysis of the facts can we move in the best direction.
- Have you decided on your objectives & outcomes? If you are not sure of your goal, any decision-making process is going to be a challenge so establish âGoal Clarityâ.
- Make your Decision and “go with it”.
- Now you have decided on your chosen decision, it is appropriate to perform an impact assessment â what are the implications for others following your decision? (maybe it is necessary to implement mitigations)
- Decisions need a timeline, so create one that works for you & the business.
- Develop milestones on the timeline so that you can check & validate your progress.
- Did the outcome deliver as you expected? Are changes necessary? Have lessons been learnt which you need to adopt for next time?
- To wish you success!

Leaders are able to demonstrate integrity, not to promise what cannot be delivered conversely to stand by their commitments.
To demonstrate honesty and to set an example to their team both in their professional and their personal lives.
