Sofema Aviation Services (SAS) www.sassofia.com looks at the critical errors which are made and which can impact the lack of success when we strive for operational excellence.

Ineffective Systems – Implementing systems and processes that do not fit or meet the customers’ objectives or needs. It is a reality not to be forgotten, that it is the customer who provides the revenue that the organisation needs to “thrive”.

  • Build into your systems a level of tolerance and the capacity to react to needed change.

Lack of Employee Involvement – Failing to engage with employees effectively related to any process re-engineering.

  • Employees are one of the most valuable assets that the company is managing.
  • Team Members are not only a valuable source of ideas and information, they have the capacity to identify disconnects and opportunities in a timely manner.
  • Involving employees in determining the solution will usually lead to a more successful implementation.

Metrics Which Miss the Mark – The ability to measure the effectiveness of the business is an essential attribute of a successful organisation, if we fall short then we will miss an opportunity to stay “on course”.

  • Do not attempt to “overmeasure” An organisation will “struggle” to process an excess of data (often referred to as “data rich but information poor”).
  • Badly designed metrics can even encourage negative behaviours with unintended consequences.
  • Understand in advance the intended purpose of the data which you have gathered.

Insufficient or a Lack of Process Visibility – Compounded where there is also a lack of process ownership.

  • Ensure that there is a clearly defined and effective process ownership.
  • Ensure that sufficient transparency exists for all critical processes.

Meeting Technology “Head-to-Head” – Do not turn your back or standstill. Technological solutions abound with the opportunity to implement technology where this has a demonstratable positive effect on the business.

Balancing Production & Demand – Whilst we need to produce a “product” to drive our profit an overly optimistic outlook can result in over-production, additional storage costs, and waste.

Time Delays – Any Process Delays will incur costs.

  • Manage timelines to optimise output cost against revenue.

Failing to Innovate – Consider the difference between Operational Excellence and Operational Innovation. Operational excellence refers to performance improvements within existing business practices.

  • Operational innovation drives innovative change through employee engagement to achieve new ways of managing business practices or, providing customer service, or in fact involving in any other activity performed by the business.
