Introduction

From time to time and despite our best endeavours we find ourselves in the middle of a conflict situation. It is a reality in the workplace and conflicts can often escalate from small precursor events or other forms of tension.

Workplace Conflicts in the workplace can lead to negative outcomes including loss of productivity and failure to meet strategic objectives. However, all is not lost and there are techniques by which we can work to diffuse the situation amicably.

What is Workplace Conflict

Whilst a degree of conflict in the workplace is not unusual, issues can arise depending on the degree of conflict which can range from a mild disagreement to full-on opposition.

Conflict can occur in multiple workplace situations, between individuals or across and within groups. Effective “Conflict Management”, requires a positive approach to managing any differences in a sensitive, inclusive and respectful way.

Conflict Pre-Cursors

  • Leadership Style – Different types of leader-driven relationships can cause stress in some individuals.
  • Frustration may be felt when expectations are not met during collaboration during a project.
  • Lack of Mutual Respect creates pressure points.
  • Attitude and Behavioural Differences – Potential Miss-Understanding.
  • Character Difference -Introvert / Extrovert.
  • Work Ethics & Culture / Blame Game.
  • Lack of Understanding Regarding Missed or Failed Outcomes.

Delivering Positive Outcomes to Minimize Conflict

It is essential that all team members have the level of competency needed to support their roles and responsibilities. Effective communication is essential together with transparent accountability.

Cultural Diversity is a human condition which all organisations need to embrace and to accept build a positive workplace culture with focus on common areas.

As a leader you should be able to do the following:

  • Always look for positive outcomes – a negative approach will never deliver the best result
  • Be Able to listen to all sides without judgement (if necessary, hold separate conversations) establish an understanding regarding the source of the conflict.
  • Do not act alone If there is a serious issue consult with HR for the appropriate level of engagement.
