Sofema Aviation Services (SAS) www.sassofia.com considers the Role & Purpose of ARP4754A

Introduction

ARP4754A serves to demonstrate with an adequate level of confidence that the project complies with the requirements defined by the reference CS and that errors in the design and implementation phases are identified and corrected so that the system meets the applicable Certification Basis.

The process that guides the development of systems and their functions, controlling activities and results to obtain a certain level of performance, characteristics, and safety (human and environmental) is called Development Assurance.

The purpose of Development Assurance is to develop the aircraft system with all the activities in order to guarantee the achievement of the objectives with a disciplined method, in which an assessment and limitation of the probability that errors made in the activities can impact the safety of the whole aircraft. Human behaviour is regulated to ensure the constant updating of traceability, identification and correction of errors.

ARP4754A Considers:

  • The development of aircraft system
  • Aircraft operating environment and functions
  • Validation of requirements
  • Verification of the design implementation for certification and product assurance.
  • Supports practices for showing compliance

The guidelines in the document were developed in the context of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14CFR) Part 25 and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Certification Specification (CS) CS-25.

Addresses the development cycle for aircraft and systems that implement aircraft functions.

Note: ARP4754A does not include:

  • Specific coverage of detailed software or electronic hardware development
  • In-service safety activities
  • Aircraft structural development
  • Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) or
  • Configuration Deviation List (CDL).

ARP4754A Includes:

  • All necessary information to develop an aircraft system, considering the operating environment and the functions performed by the aircraft;
  • The Integral Process is an iterative process that includes eight steps, including the Safety Assessment;
  • Compliance with regulations;
  • Context of Part 25 or CS 25.

The Integral Process consists of several steps:

  • Safety Assessment (compliance with regulations 1309 of the CSs), (System Safety);
  • DAL (development assurance level) assignment, which determines the rigour of complex hardware and software development and verification activities, to avoid human errors in the design phase that can have more or less serious consequences for safety in the denial of one of the functions they perform, (System Safety);
  • Requirements Capture (System Engineering): further detail for existing requirements and newly derived requirements are identified at each requirements identification phase and allocation process (i.e., system and item);
  • Requirements Validation (System Engineering);
  • Implementation Verification (System Engineering);
  • Configuration Management (CM);
  • Process Assurance (Systems): it describes the means that ensure the development assurance activities are maintained and followed;
  • Certification and Regulatory Authority Coordination (Project Management PM).

DAL (Development Assurance Level) for functions, equipment or software comes from the Safety Assessment and represents the method to prescribe more or less rigorous rules and measures depending on the criticality of the failure condition, in order to avoid errors during the development phases of the functions and systems.

Starting from the initial planning phase, the Integral Process interfaces with the development process, which develops the functions of the aircraft, born in the concept, allocates these functions to each system, and develops a system architecture (layering of functions across systems).
