As we develop our Safety Management System (SMS) training program we have an opportunity to continually improve the program, the acceptance and the net benefit to the organisation.

Consider the elements involved in the training we are going to deliver across the organisation.

a) Basic Concept of the need for SMS Training

To share this is relatively straight forward in as much as we can call on a myriad of statistics and evidence based examples which can show the student how we are in a far better place.

As a result of improvements in Technology, Training together with an understanding of the need for the management of competences and the effectiveness of organisation process and procedures.

b) An understanding of “our” SMS system within “our” organisation

We have to share with the student the details of how our system functions so that they can engage with the SMS in the way that the organisation requires them to do so.

c) A thorough understanding of risk and exposure – what is a hazard and what is a risk?

Whilst this is a fundamental requirement – many students do not have an initial grasp of what are the differences between a risk and a hazard and the different ways in which we should perceive a hazard.

d) The challenges we face in “our” organisation

We should also consider the role of organisational cultural behaviour and how this can impact our SMS either in a positive way or can in fact be detrimental to the most effective processes we need to engage with.

e) The expectations which we place on “our” people

Without our people playing a full role in the delivery of our SMS we will not deliver the most effective SMS that we are capable of providing. We need to ensure that the “personal obligation and responsibility” placed on our people is met.

f) How we measure and deliver our SMS metrics across our organisation

The more ways that we can measure the effectiveness of our SMS using Metrics which we can consider as Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)

g) How we measure the effectiveness of the training we are delivering.

Our Training will directly impact the effectiveness of the SMS process within our organisation, If our training is targeted and focused and is received in the best way by the students who “buy into” the needs for our Safety Management System.
