Introduction
It is a fact of business life within aviation that many organisations tend to look at the process of crisis and emergency management as a tedious activity or maybe even a nuisance as well as a regulatory obligation.
It is only when something goes wrong and very occasionally really wrong that we benefit from a structured process which lets us manage the emergency in the best possible way.
To get to this point of being ready is not by chance it is as a result of developing efficient and effective process and procedures managing training so that all stake holders remain fully competent and having sufficient practice events both as table top exercises and real events.
The Need for an Effective ERP
A well developed and effective emergency response plan (ERP) will allow an organisation to cope with any disruptions in normal ops, to respond in the most correct way and to provide for a managed approach which will allow speedy return to normal ops.
An effective control and command centre with effective communication processes which are managed and controlled within the framework of the ERP should enable the most effective decision-making process to be realised throughout all elements of the disruption.
We live in a media intensive world and any news in aviation very quickly comes to the attention of the media including airport disruptions and other events.
The ERP should enable us to deal with all media communications in the most effective way. It is important to control our delivery channel and manage the media communication in the most positive and proactive way possible.
We also need to ensure that the same message is delivered across all our platforms including social media.
Role of “On Airport” Fire and Emergency Services
Under Normal as well as Abnormal conditions, airport fire crews will deal with road traffic collisions as first responders within the airport boundary. Typically this will include other events as well for example chemical spillages, or events with airport buildings themselves including any associated rescues etc.
If required external support is sought and external fire services are co-opted to allow the airport crews to resume normal cover which is essential as part of the return to normal services.
