> Rex to trial electric planes on short routes in 2024
According to the airline’s deputy chairman John Sharp, one of Rex’s 34-seat Saab 340s – retrofitted with an electric and hydrogen-powered MagniX engine – will be used to trial the technology on short routes such as Adelaide-Mount Gambier. Read more

>> DHL Express breaks ground for Munich gateway facility
DHL Express Germany marked the official start of construction for its new Munich Airport facility with a groundbreaking ceremony. The building, which is being built on parking lots P 80 and P 80 West, will boast a gross floor area of over 11,000 square meters. This will make the facility almost seven times larger than the warehouse DHL Express currently rents at Munich Airport’s cargo centre. DHL Express will build and operate the new site on land leased from the airport operator Flughafen München GmbH (Munich Airport). Read more

> easyJet launches 21 new routes and frequencies from Lisbon and becomes UK’s largest carrier to Portugal this winter
Following the allocation of 18 new daily slots at Lisbon airport by the European Commission, easyJet has today announced that it will base three additional Airbus A321neo, the company’s biggest aircraft, at its base in Lisbon which will enable the airline to launch 21 new routes and increase frequencies to eight countries, including a new twice-weekly winter service from Birmingham to Lisbon. Flights will be available for sale from August 15th. Read more

>> Colombia’s Aviation Authorities Fine 19 Airlines For Abusive Passenger Practices
The Colombian civil aviation authorities announced a penalty of 1.4 billion Colombian pesos (around US$332,500) to 19 airlines, including Avianca, LATAM, Viva Colombia, as well as KLM, Aeromexico, American Airlines, Copa Airlines, and more, after finding out they had abusive practices against their passengers. This included the waiver of users’ rights and lack of solidary responsibility on impacted codeshare flights. Read more

> SpiceJet flights restricted to 50% capacity by aviation regulator
In a big action against SpiceJet, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has restricted departures to 50 percent of the number of approved departures. Read more

>> Qatar Airways CEO eager to exit A380 fleet
Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int’l) will continue to retire its A380-800s as soon as feasible, seeing no long-term future for the giant jet in its fleet, according to Group Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker. Speaking to Simple Flying, he reiterated he still considered the A380 his “biggest mistake”. Read more

> Investigators blame American Airlines pilot for bad takeoff
Federal investigators say a mistake by the captain of an American Airlines flight caused the plane’s wing to clip the ground during takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport in 2019. Read more
