Sofema Aviation Services (SAS) considers challenges related to the provision of the GO Team in response to an Airline Emergency.

What is a GO Team?

The GO Team refers to the group of management, specialists, volunteers, as well as other support personnel, trained & competent to provide management, assistance, and support during and after a major aircraft accident.

Managing and executing on-site all airline-related aspects of any incident or accident location away from the main base.

Typical GO Team Activities Include:

  • Co-ordination and co-operation with ā€˜local authoritiesā€™
  • On-site Humanitarian Assistance Operations
  • Support for Aircraft Accident Investigation – to the extent permitted by relevant regulatory authorities
  • Reputational management

Typical Composition of an Airline GO Team:

  • Command and Control element
  • Airline Accident Investigation Team
  • Humanitarian Assistance Team
  • Crisis Communications presence
  • Operations Support & Administration (Ops Support & Admin)

– Humanitarian Manager – Usually an experienced senior airline manager responsible for the airlineā€™s Crisis Director through GO Team Leader.

– Primary Responsibility – ā€œhumanitarian assistanceā€ & ā€œpeopleā€ issues.

The ā€˜Humanitarian Assistance Team (HAT) is typically provided either by the airline itself or by third-party humanitarian support specialists (may deploy separately to the accident location).

– Investigation Manager ā€“ The Investigation Manager will typically be the senior manager (or designated representative) in the airlineā€™s (Typically a member of the Flight Safety Department) Responsible to the airlineā€™s Crisis Director through GO Team Leader ā€“ To represent the airline related to the needs of the air accident investigation.

Note – Should be trained in process and procedures related to ā€˜accident site hazardsā€™, ā€˜first-aidā€™ and ā€˜bloodborne pathogen managementā€™

– GO Team Leader (Command & Control) – Designated by the on-duty Crisis Director.

Experienced with an appropriate operational background as a mandatory requirement. Typically the GO team leader will be a member of the ERP Group or a specially trained and prepared deputy Crisis Director.

Travel to the Accident Site

  • How will the GO Team reach the accident scene?
  • Provisionally plan transport to the accident scene as soon as practicable
  • Either designate a go-aircraft or block seats on the most suitable aircraft
  • If an accident means that the airport is closed identify the nearest suitable airport and travel method to reach the accident site
  • Consider potential weather conditions at the accident site.
  • Using the assigned GO Kit (with sufficient availability of the following):

– Personal protective equipment for biohazards

– Insect repellent

– Sunblock

– Basic first aid kit

– Gloves

– Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear

– Other safety equipment

– Company identification

– Passport

– Vaccination record

– Driverā€™s license

– Credit and ATM cards

– Expense forms

– GSM Phones plus Charges and additional power packs

– Satellite Phone

– Digital camera with extra batteries

– Laptop computer with wireless capability extra battery and charger

– Emergency response manual

– Contact list

– Notepads

  • Other equipment and personnel effects which may be required on the go-plane
  • Ensure emergency response center has full call capability operational
  • Ensure International capability available for phones that will be used during the response.
  • Replace perishable items in go-kits on a regular basis ā€“ Batteries!
