Part FCL Subpart D – Commercial Pilots Licence – CPL Considerations. Overview by Sofema Aviation Services (SAS) www.sassofia.com

General Comments

Minimum age – 18 years of age.

Privileges: The privileges of the holder of a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) are, within the appropriate aircraft category, to:

  • Exercise all the privileges of the holder of a LAPL and a PPL;
  • Act as PIC or co-pilot of any aircraft engaged in operations other than commercial air transport;
  • Act as PIC in commercial air transport of any single-pilot aircraft subject to the restrictions specified;
  • Act as co-pilot in commercial air transport subject to the restrictions specified.

Conditions. An applicant for the issue of a (CPL) shall have fulfilled the requirements for the class or type rating of the aircraft used in the skill test.

Applicants for an ATPL(A) shall hold:

  • An MPL; or
  • A CPL(A) and a multi-engine IR for aeroplanes (Shall also have received instruction in MCC.)

Experience.

  • For an ATPL(A) minimum of 1 500 hours of flight time in aeroplanes, including at least:

o 500 hours in multi-pilot operations on aeroplanes;

o 500 hours as PIC under supervision; or

o 250 hours as PIC; or

o 250 hours, including at least 70 hours as PIC, and the remaining as PIC under supervision;

o 200 hours of cross-country flight time of which at least 100 hours shall be as PIC or as PIC under supervision;

o 75 hours of instrument time of which not more than 30 hours may be instrument ground time; and

o 100 hours of night flight as PIC or co-pilot.

Note: Of the 1500 hours of flight time, up to 100 hours of flight time may have been completed in a Full Flight Simulator (FFS) and Flight and Navigation Procedures Trainer (FNPT). Of these 100 hours, only a maximum of 25 hours may be completed in an FNPT.

Crediting: Holders of a pilot license for other categories of aircraft shall be credited with a flight time up to a maximum of:

  • For Touring Motor Glider (TMG) or sailplanes, 30 hours flown as PIC;

Skill test

Applicants for an ATPL(A) shall pass a skill test in accordance with Appendix 9 to this Part to demonstrate the ability to perform, as PIC of a multi-pilot aeroplane under IFR, the relevant procedures and manoeuvres with the competency appropriate to the privileges granted.

The skill test shall be taken in the aeroplane or an adequately qualified FFS representing the same type.
