Rus Sutaria @ Avia Intelligence Ltd

Aviation Reliability Training that works for your business

An article by our  Guest Blogger and Senior Reliability Trainer Rustom D. Sutaria of Avia Intelligence.

Aircraft maintenance reliability can and usually is a complicated concept. Most engineering professionals refer to it as a ‘Dark Art’ or ‘Rocket Science’. As a lecturer, I am frequently faced with an insistence, that it is better to leave it to the software to tell you when and where a problem might be about to surface. Although not an incorrect or non-compliant approach, I often ask my students a simple question, what if you entered the data incorrectly, or the software simply got it wrong?

As Sofema’s guest blogger and Maintenance Programming & Reliability specialist, I am often surprised by the cautiousness of aviation engineers when faced with what might seem to be almost ‘calculus-like’ formulae. In all truth, the formulae are simple and easy to use when given the time, and the guidance. The courses help users understand, and more particularly allows them to draw the right conclusions from the results presented to them.

When developing the reliability theory element, we made the particular point of including statistical mathematics, and quickly realised, that if the theory and indeed the mathematics isn’t easy to follow and use, aircraft maintenance engineers, will be unable to make sense of the processes, and would quickly dismiss them. The net result, will be that, reliability and the maths behind will in most parts be left to the computer software – We would have achieved nothing.

The concern for both Sofema, relates to the over-reliance on computers. Computers are not infallible, but even the great John Glenn (Mercury 7 Astronaut & the First American in Space) insisted on a human double-check of the NASA computer’s results before he committed to the first orbital flight. It seems that we as an industry have lost that level of diligence & cautiousness.

Therefore, with Astronaut John Glenn in mind, Sofema Aviation together with Rus Sutaria decided that it was equally as important to develop reliability training that allowed engineers to double-check the ‘computer’s arithmetic’ by providing the mathematical tools to do it themselves.

The Sofema Reliability training courses have been developed with practicality in mind. Our course’s combination of theory and related mathematical principles has been designed to demonstrate a logical process to the delegates that promotes best maintenance practices whilst maintaining continued oversight of aircraft maintenance programme effectiveness.

Our courses are generally developed with several constituents in mind:

  • Effective Reliability Programme Development & Implementation
  • An in depth understanding of the mathematics.
  • How to introduce meaningful reliability analysis without having to expend both time and cost on using 100% of the data.

In simple terms, reliability (like safety risk management), is a function of probability, and we make a point of also demonstrating the reliability contribution to overall safety management.
