Sofema Highlights the Success Stories of Aviation Professionals Who Completed a SOL Diploma

We are glad to highlight the success story of Mizraim Montalvo – Tropic Air’s Chief Training Captain and a dedicated aviation leader. He has completed two of our signature diplomas: Safety Management System for Flight Operations Safety Managers and Aviation Leadership & Management Skills Development.
We asked Captain Montalvo a couple of questions:
1.Could you tell us a bit about your aviation journey so far?
My aviation journey began with a childhood fascination for aircraft that evolved into a lifelong passion. I earned my commercial licence and advanced myself to become the Chief Training Captain for this reputable airline name TROPIC AIR, the largest airline in Belize. Presently, I have approximately 16,000 flight hours.
2.What inspired you to pursue a lifelong commitment to learning, even with your extensive experience?
In Aviation, learning never stops. Every flight, every student and every challenge brings a new lesson. What truly inspires me is the responsibility we hold-not just for safety, but for shaping the next generation of aviators. Continuous learning allows me to stay sharp, lead by examples and adapt to an ever-evolving industry. My passion for growth is driven by the belief that excellence in aviation is achieved through humility, discipline, and constant self- improvement.
3. How did you first hear about the Sofema Aviation Services and what initially caught your attention about our training programs?
I first came across Sofema when Tropic Air’s Quality Assurance Manager, for Maintenance, a very smart person, brought it up. What caught my attention was the depth and practical relevance of its content. It wasn’t just theoretical but applicable to real-world operations.
4.Why did you choose to pursue the SMS for Flight Ops Safety Managers Diploma alongside the Leadership Program?
What made these programs particularly valuable or relevant to your role?
I choose to pursue both programs because I believe that operational safety and strong leadership are inseparable pillars in aviation. As Chief Training Captain, my role involved not just training pilots but shape the safety-first culture across Tropic Air.
These programs were not only comprehensive and practical but also directly aligned with the day-to-day realities of my responsibilities. The content reflects the real-world challenges in aviation safety and leadership from managing human factors to fostering a proactive safety culture. Sofema gave me the tools to make informed decisions, implement changes effectively and mentor others with greater confidence.
5. What are some of the most important takeaways, lessons, or skills you’ve gained through your studies with Sofema? How have these programs influenced your confidence, mindset, or professional outlook?
One of the most impactful takeaways was the ability to view safety and leadership through a system-thinking lens. I learned how to anticipate risk, perform root causes analysis, and develop robust mitigation strategies – all while balancing regulatory compliance with operational efficiency.
These programs have reinforced my belief that leadership in aviation requires more than experience. It demands continuous learning and adaptability. It has elevated my confidence in managing complex challenges, strengthened my commitment to safety, leadership and broadened my professional vision beyond national boundaries.
